What feature(s) would you most like to see added to gmail?

From web app Isaac
  • Privacy controls.

I don't use gmail actively because I don't feel that I have (enough) control over the data I put on Google's servers.

Isaac : Man you guys are sure "friendly" around here. I try to ask a question on meta.webapps. Can't cuz I need at least 5 rep on the actual site. I answer a question about Chrome as Off topic and some one downvotes me even though other questions about browsers (non web apps) have been closed. I ask a question to see what features poeple want in their favorite web apps. I get a request for community wiki (which is fine. I'm still learning) and then the question gets closed because it MIGHT be argumentative. All of this in the span of less than an hour on my first day on your site.
phwd : @Issac Though the question is closed , I believe you can still edit you question in a more suitable format at this time (maybe even choosing just *one* application) allowing for a reopen. If the community wants it .... it will be reopened. Look at the current (non-cw) questions here and give it a next shot. I will even put in the votes so you can have the rep needed for your meta discussion.
Isaac : Thank you for your consideration Tom. I'll take a stab at it.

    • nested labels
    • more logical placing of different buttons (Report Spam is besides Archive!)
    • delivery confirmation
Darryl Hein : How would nested labels work? I understand how they work in Gmail when using Outlook, but I don't understand their usefulness when using only labels (no folders).
Lazer : A message should be labeled with the leaf label (assigned to it) as well as all the parent labels. It helps in better grouping of messages.

  • Merge Threads

Darryl Hein : This would make my life so much easier--damn people who edit subjects!
torbengb : @Darryl, editing the subject is a feature, useful when the actual subject of the mails change, and then it's nice that it starts a new thread. Does anybody edit subjects just for fun?
    From Nifle
    • Mail delivery/receipt
    • Partial visibility on the gtalk widget (visible for some, invisible to others)
    • Improved message editor(Insert images, maps, calender, sound, flash from the menu like an html editor)
    • Nested Lavel (Like directory tree in OS)
    • Notification from other Google Products like "Orkut" (Not as a mail but as a simple popup.)
  • Different signatures selectable for each mail address.

Agent_9191 : This already exists. When you have multiple accounts set up, the spot where you update your signature has a drop down of all the addresses.
Darryl Hein : Here is more info about separate signatures per account: http://gmailblog.blogspot.com/2010/07/rich-text-signatures.html
    • Sorting messages by date.
    • In the view pane, I would like to see the data and time of each message. I receive hundreds of automated emails yesterday, and this would be useful to see the timestamp of the messages from yesterday, or from last week.
  • 1 Contact info grabber -- select the contact info, click button, info gets parsed and inserted into new contact, or updates existing one.

2 Improved Calendar item parsing -- similar to idea above, except creates calendar item. Currently GMail creates one potential calendar item, but if email contains a series of items, you're out of luck.

3 Make "recent conversations" available with one click from hovering over contact link. Currently the user has to hover, then click on "more" select "recent conversations", then click.

  • Better task management. I'd like to be able to:

    • Share task lists
    • Search for tasks
    • Enter dates for tasks via the keyboard (right now it can't be done via keyboard)
    • Manage tasks in bulk (e.g. assign many tasks the same due date, or move many tasks to a different list)
    • Delegate tasks
  • Better contact management. I'd like to be able to:

    • Add contact with one click when contact info is detected (e.g. in a signature)
    • Easily look up a contact's details by name
