How can I make a backup copy of my Wii games?

I have two small children. No matter how careful I am, they always seem to get their hands on my Wii game discs and scratch them so I can't play them any more.

Is there a way I can backup/copy my games so that I'm protected when this happens?

It would seem like I should be able to make a byte-for-byte copy of the disk, and the Wii shouldn't be able to tell the difference. Is there any software that will do this? Am I crazy?

  • It is not possible, they are not regular DVDs or Blu-Rays (or even HD-DVDs)

You have to have custom hardware. Which I'm presuming you don't, but if you had the hardware, you'd be Nintendo?

Stefan Kendall : This is not a solution.
McKay : @Stefan Kendall: There is no solution. I'm merely stating that fact. The formats are incompatible with DVD or Blu-Ray. The question "Has Stefan stopped beating his wife?" might be correctly answered "Stefan has never beat his wife" Though technically it is not an answer to the yes/no question.
Stefan Kendall : While there is no DIRECT solution, there is quite certainly an indirect solution, and that's piracy. Whether or not you agree you should be able to pirate games you own is a separate matter.
tzenes : @Stefan discussion of piracy is restricted from gaming.se
Arda Xi : It's not impossible actually. There is a legal way of doing it. (At least since Jeff allows softmodding)
splattered bits : From my research, you have to softmod your Wii to play copied games. Plus, you have to have a special CD drive that knows how to read Wii discs.
    From McKay
  • First of all, store your wii games in a location your kids can't reach. (high place)

Secondly, Put the wii itself also in a location they can't reach.

Now, each time they want to play a game, they will need come to you and ask you friendly if they can play this game and you are the one that is putting the (out of reach) disk in the (out of reach) wii.

As an added bonus, this allows you to become more involved in their gaming and also see which games they're playing.

McKay : He's not asking, "How do I keep the disks from getting scratched?", he's asking, "How do I copy the game?"?
antony.trupe : @McKay the question contains a proposed solution that is fundamentally flawed. this is an answer to the underlying issue/question.
McKay : Then shouldn't that be a different question? Someone else looking for solutions to scratched disks for a different reason, probably doesn't care about how to try to prevent his [potentially non-existent] kids from getting at the disks?
McKay : Also, "It's not possible" is a perfectly valid answer. I don't think his question is "What can I do to prevent my kids from getting at the Wii disks. He even said "No matter how careful I am"
antony.trupe : I think the question is "How do I prevent my kids from scratching the wii disks?". maybe it belongs on a parenting SE site, maybe another question on the gaming site, maybe this question just needs edited hard-core.
